Changes to filters: EU directive to curb pollution from single-use plastic

The EU has adopted a directive aimed at curbing single-use plastic pollution. This applies in particular to filters for tobacco products. In addition to cigarette filters, pipe filters are also affected. The issue has been known since around 2010. In the EU, however, decisions were only made in 2019 that will clearly regulate the legal situation in the future. More details are linked below and can be read.

Surely you have already noticed that many filter products have been offered differently in recent years than before. The first rethought products came onto the market in Germany around 2016. In the meantime, plastic has been completely banned from filter products. As a result, not only the packaging of all kinds of tobacco filters changed. The structure of the products was also fundamentally changed.

Cigarette filters: Cigarette filters contain cellulose acetate (cellulose acetate). This is a classic plastic, but it is poorly biodegradable. At least in the medium term, the material must therefore disappear from the market. If their standard product has not yet changed, it very likely will soon. Differences in function for the regular buyer are definitely noticeable. In our opinion, however, the overall product quality has not deteriorated.

Cigarette holders: Cigarette holders may still be sold as a reusable product. However, in the case of a combination of FIlter and cigarette tip, the filter material may also have changed in recent years.

Pipe filters: The same applies to pipe filters as to cigarette filters. Here, however, it is mainly a question of replacing plastic caps, rather than the filter material itself. However, differences are also noticeable here for the consumer.

On 21.05.2019, the EU directive to curb pollution from single-use plastic was adopted in Brussels. The directive also provides regulations for tobacco product filters: among others, the participation of manufacturers in the disposal costs and additional labelling obligations of the package.

Our advice: Always take a pocket ashtray with you. This always avoids the problem of disposal.
